Description
A variegated sport found on Acer palmatum ‘Summer Gold’ at Kwekerij van Son & Koot in Holland, the ‘Anne Irene’ is a beautiful, eye-catching Japanese Maple that inherited the bright golden foliage of its parent, but has frilly-edged leaves that are outlined with orange-red. The leaves emerge in spring a golden to lime green color gradually transitioning to brighter yellow as the season progresses. Fall brings spectacular pinkish orange-red to maroons shades. Based on the growth rate we’ve seen thus far, Anne Irene might reach 6 feet tall or so in 10 years and 14 to 16 feet tall and 8 to 9 feet wide at maturity. Its smaller stature and rounded vase shape make it ideal for use as colorful accent tree in small to medium size spaces and containers. This one likes morning and evening sun but will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the hot afternoon hours.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, Anne Irene Japanese Maple is best used in design as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, you can plant them in groupings of three or use two to frame an entryway. Excellent for growing in containers.
Spacing: At least 12 feet apart for space between trees
Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape…that is if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when selecting companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcover plants that won’t interfere at all with your tree.
