Description
An oldie-but-goodie that’s been around as long as we can remember, and still one of our favorites of the hardy fountain grasses. Pennisetum ‘Moudry’, what we call Black Fountain Grass, is an easy to grow ornamental perennial grass adored for its distinctive and showy, foxtail-like dark purple to almost-black flower spikes that rise above an attractive clump of gracefully arching green leaves that turn bright golden-yellow in fall. The flowers turn silvery as they dry and are excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried floral arrangements. Both the texture and color of this grass makes for a fine accent in smaller garden spaces or containers or in groupings or as a border in large spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide, Black Fountain Grass is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a border in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, rock gardens, black gardens, around garden ponds, and cut flower gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 30 inches apart for mass plantings; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences
Black Fountain Grass is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full sun to part shade. Constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Plants are quite drought tolerant once established. Maintenance is little to none. A damaged flower can be removed any time during the season. Foliage should be cut back near the ground annually before new leaves begin to emerge in late winter or early spring.
