Description
Stalwarts of the fall garden, Chrysanthemums, commonly called fall garden mums, are late-season flowering perennials that are sure to provide a bounty of eye-catching, jewel-toned color in the garden at a time when many other blooming plants are winding down and fading out for the season. They are typically hardy in USDA Zones 6a-9b, which means they’ll survive winter low temperatures down to -10F. At 12 to 18 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, depending on pruning, garden mums are excellent for growing in garden beds or containers, but do keep in mind that in containers they’ll lose about 10 to 20 degrees of their cold hardiness. We snip the mums growing in our gardens back to about half their height around the 4th of July. This pruning delays flowering to later in the season and forms more dense plants that will have twice as many flowers as opposed to allowing them to grow naturally. The choice to prune or not is up to you.
‘Blazing Orange’ Garden Mum is a fall bloomer featuring abundant orange decorative double flowers over a long period in fall. It has a fine mounded habit.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 18 to 24 inches tall and 24 to 36 inches wide, the Blazing Orange Garden Mum is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings in sunny perennial borders or along paths, walkways or around patios and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, cut flower gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, cottage gardens and orange theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches for mass plantings; 48 inches for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Garden mums are easy to grow in most any well-drained but moist soil of average fertility in full sun or part shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. In the deep South plants would prefer a break from the hot, direct sun during the mid-afternoon hours. As with many other perennial plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Heavy, dense clay soils should be amended with organic matter to improve drainage. To delay flowering to later in the season and form a more dense plant with twice as many flowers, snip plants back by half their height in mid-June to early July.
