Description
A shrub rose that produces fully-formed double flowers that look like a tea rose, but have excellent disease resistance to fungal diseases such as leaf spot and powdery mildew? Meet the Brindabella Purple Prince Shrub Rose, a vigorous purple-flowering beauty that sets the new standard for shrubs roses with superior genetics for disease resistance and a fragrance that will stop any passerby in their tracks.
The Purple Prince Shrub Rose produces an abundance of super-fragrant, fully double, magenta-purple flowers that fade to a deep lavender in spring and then in 6 week cycles throughout the season to frost. The flowers have the most perfume you could ever expect in a rose in the truest sense and are are self-cleaning, which means no deadheading required. Though very vigorous, this low maintenance rose grows to only 4 feet tall and wide in 2 years time. Very well suited to home gardens and commercial landscapes alike.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 5 feet tall and wide, the Brindabella Purple Prince Shrub Rose is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a colorful hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to rose gardens, cottage gardens and purple theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3.5 feet apart for hedges; 8 feet apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Brindabella Rose variety is not winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
The Brindabella Purple Prince Rose is easy to grow in average, moist but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. As with all other roses, to avoid powdery mildew, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves. Afternoon shade or filtered sun is fine. We suggest 6 hours of direct sun light for best flowering.
Maintenance is minimal. the Brindabella Purple Prince Rose does not require pruning or deadheading, but can benefit from it. To keep your rose full and bushy from year to year prune the branches back to about 18 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring. After this hard pruning, your rose will quickly flush out and start blooming with the arrival of warmer spring temperatures. Deadheading spent flowers through the season is not necessary however will encourage more new buds and flowers.
