Description
Unrivaled in its beauty among boxwoods, the Dwarf English Boxwood, Buxus sempervirens ‘Suffruticosa’, has been the most extensively planted boxwood in the United States over the past century. This is the two-ball poodle tier topiary version. Its small, glossy evergreen leaves provide a fine and delicate texture in the landscape. A slow-grower, it will rarely require pruning, maybe a light trim once a year in mid spring. Unlike many other boxwoods that prefer full sun, you might be happy to know that the Dwarf English Boxwood prefers part shade and will even tolerate mostly shade. We suggest some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours. Excellent in garden beds or pots that can be situated on patios, decks porches and around other outdoor living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to about 3 feet tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, the Two-Ball Poodle Tier Dwarf English Boxwood is ideal for growing in garden beds or containers. Use one as an accent or two to frame an entrance. A fine addition to English gardens and formal gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Use as a specimen or two to frame an entrance or spaced in a row.
Growing Preferences
The Dwarf English Boxwood prefers a moist but well drained soil and part shade. Constantly wet soils are a killer. Unlike many other boxwood varieties that like the sun, we suggest providing some filtered sun or shade during the hot afternoon hours. Direct sun in the morning and evenings is fine. It will grow in mostly shade but the foliage won’t be as dense. Trim for shaping purposes one time a year after new growth has emerged and matured.
