Description
Found growing on or near beaches, dunes, salt marshes, and pinelands, but adapting well to inland gardens, Seaside Goldenrod is a highly salt and deer tolerant North American native perennial featuring 3 to 8 foot stalks topped with dense, nectar-rich, golden-yellow flowers in late summer through fall that are a magnet to butterflies! The dried seeds provide a food source for birds. The thick, waxy, succulent type leaves deter salt and sand penetration, making this perennial a great choice for coastal gardens.
PLEASE NOTE: Contrary to popular belief, Goldenrod (Solidago) does not cause allergies. Its pollen is sticky so does not blow in the wind. Bees transfer it from plant to plant. If you experience allergy symptoms during the fall it’s most likely from ragweed, which blooms at about the same time as goldenrod.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 8 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, Seaside Goldenrod can be used as an accent or is truly breathtaking in groupings or mass plantings in a sunny landscape or woodland borders and perennial gardens. A fine addition to butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, coastal gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, native gardens, and yellow theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2 to 3 feet apart for mass plantings; 7 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Seaside Goldenrod is very easy to grow in most any well-drained but moist soil in full sun or part shade. Flowering will be heavier with more sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sun for best flowering. Highly tolerant of salt and deer.
