Description
Summer Snowflake Viburnum is one of a very few ornamental shrubs that blooms all season long in our gardens, producing a flush of beautiful, white, lacecap-like flower clusters every month from April through October! Attractive bright red berries in late summer are enjoyed by the birds and are followed by wine-red fall foliage. The specimen in our gardens has taken on a natural form similar to that of the native dogwood tree. In spring, when in full bloom, visitors to the gardens who see it from a distance mistake it for a dogwood…until upon closer inspection they see the beautiful lacecap flowers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide at maturity, the Summer Snowflake Viburnum can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive small tree ideal for use as an eye-catching specimen or groupings in landscape and flowering shrub borders. Also useful to frame corners of homes and entryways or as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings . A welcome addition to cut flower gardens, white theme gardens, wildlife gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants.
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Viburnum variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Viburnum is very easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers a loamy soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants it does not like constantly soggy or wet conditions. Quite drought tolerant when established and we’ve seen no serious pest or disease problems. Deer haven’t touched it in our gardens. For best flowering, at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested. Responds very well to pruning for shaping, size control and tree forming. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.
