Description
A beautiful and exotic addition to the shade garden, the Sunny Spirit Toad Lily is a hardy and easy-to-grow perennial featuring star-shaped, orchid-like flowers with petals having jewel-tones of light purple with dark purple spots. Each flower features six showy tepals; 3 inner petals and 3 outer sepals which are similar in appearance. The flowers bloom from late summer through fall attracting butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. What’s more, Sunny Spirit displays lovely variegated green leaves with golden-yellow borders that will light up the shade garden. Absolutely sparkles in the shade garden and needless to say is quite the conversation piece!
In case you were wondering where the name “toad lily” came from, the name refers to flowers being spotted like toads and having warty, sac-like bumps which are the nectaries.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 24 to 36 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, the Sunny Spirit Toad Lily is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in shady landscape and perennial borders. Also suitable for growing in pots, planters and other containers. Perfect in consistently moist soils near garden ponds or other water features. Plant near patios and other outdoor sitting areas where the exotic flowers can be appreciated from close up. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, container gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens, woodland borders and around water gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for groupings; 4′ or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Toad Lily is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full shade or part shade. Avoid direct afternoon sun which can scald leaves. It prefers a consistently moist, humusy, organically rich soil. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a natural or organic plant food such as Espoma Plant-Tone.
